Snow

Here in Nebraska we have snow.

As everyone knows, snow means some types of outside play are no longer possible. Okay, make that no longer enjoyable.

However, there are other things one can do. They can build a mega snow fort. Timothy demonstrated with this monolith a few days ago.

And, one can always make new snow friends. And let them wear your hats, and scarves, and give them mud eyes...

One thing you certianly can't do in the summer is make snow pets. I think this was a puppy. If you look at it just right you can see it.

Then your big sister will come out and take sweet pictures of you and your new snow friends/pets.

Yeah, there might be some things you can't do because of snow, but there are lots of fun things you can do. Just like the old saying, make snowballs when the sun shines!

In the Cold Winter Time

It has been really cold and snowy the last few weeks. Yet, even in the throes of winter, new life is popping up and reminding me that spring is just around the corner.

The first sign of spring. This picture is for Mom, I knew they were just dormant!!! :D:D

With the cold weather we have made lots of progress in school. Rosie decided to make school more festive with her brilliant hat. She has been amusing all of us with her "Princess subtraction". I hear her working on her paper saying, "So, I am being chased by 7 dragons. My knights in shining armor kill 2 of them. How many are chasing me now??"

Everyone wanted to be documented working hard on school. This is proof that Becca is not only studious, but also cheerful during school.

Timothy ordered a model airplane kit on Sunday. After three whole days of agonizing waiting, it arrived yesterday. He spent the rest of the afternoon pouring over the directions and deciding how much it would be able to haul. There will be more pictures once it starts to take shape, but I had to share his excitement with you. Just think, when I was a kid we had to wait 68 weeks for stuff to come...

And We're Back

There is good news and bad news. The bad news is Joe the Hero was unable to resurrect Linus as his motherboard is fried. (Linus' not Joe's). The cost of a new motherboard superceeds the cost of a whole new computer. The good news, God has provided a computer I can borrow until further notice or I finish classes in May. After a few adjustments, it appears I will be able to run Life With Rosie from this laptop, which is super good news. Thus, without further adeu here is the latest post.

We were greatly blessed with a new to us refridgerator a few weeks back. It was too big to fit in the old fridge spot, so we moved furniture and got it into a new convenient spot.

It also brought some new and very nice changes to the old fridge spot. These pictures are mostly for my readers who have lived here, so they can see the changes. They are not intended to advertise our amazing wallpaper...

The sky in winter time has a tendency to make me feel cold and lonely, but the other morning this scene filled me with awe. Even in barreness there can be intense beauty.

This is to demonstrate the great benefits of having a trunk, or a backseat, or an extened cab, or something. Not that I am complaining about trucks, I am just saying when it comes to getting groceries...

I realized this post was made of still life photos, so I had to include one of the few moments where life is still here in the house. It feels great to be back blogging again, and hopefully I will be able to make up for my absence. Have a great weekend!

Linus (Hopefully not a Eulogy)

I don't read blogs without pictures. With the exception of course for Owl City's blog and Hillary's occasional photo-less posts, I don't read text only blogs. It is just one way I regulate my time by setting blog stalking parameters for myself, it has nothing to do with the content of photo-less blogs I assure you. Well, okay, I will confess. Blogs without pictures sometimes strike me as, this is hard to say...boring. Which is exactly why I try to use so many pictures on my blog, to keep it from being boring. In fact, this is the first post I have blogged without pictures. I will try to keep it short. My faithful laptop Linus slipped into a coma on Wednesday afternoon whilst I was in the middle of an annotated bibliography on multi-cultural children's books. (Yes, elementary education majors have all the fun). I was unable to awake him from this coma on my own, so on Friday I placed him in the care of Joe the Hero at my local computer repair shop. In the mean time, God provided an extra laptop for me to continue my schoolwork with (minus the annotated bibliography on children's books that is), and I anxiously await word on Linus' status. Also in the mean time I am spending more time off the computer and doing fun things, such as attempting to learn the steps to the Argentine tango. Side note on that topic: it is lots of fun, but be careful of your toes, especially if you are practicing with yours truly. Have a great week and Lord willing, Life With Rosie will be back to its illustrated self soon.

Typical

Currently I am out of town, going undercover as a house cleaner, student, and library volunteer in order to visit my dear friend Naomi. While we are having a great time, I have no pictures of what is going on at home. Hence, I give you a post of random pictures from the last few weeks. I had a few more, but I was so clever as to burn all the pictures from Life With Rosie 2010 onto a disk and delete them from my computer. That disk, of course, is back on my bookcase at home, so I guess they will have to wait until later. Enjoy!

Sweet neighbors who know us well enough to know we always need gloves and that we love bright colors are something to rejoice about!

My Dad is like Superman, minus the cape.

These story books never get old for the kids. I avoid them because once I open them and start reading, there is no way to stop. I think Becca spent a few hours doing this on the day this picture was taken.

This picture makes me think of the line "We were the kings and the queens..." from Taylor Swift's "Long Live". You bet they are... :D

Toto: A Eulogy

First cars are the stuff of legends. When I was 16 and about to get my driver's license, I started talking about getting a car. My wise father told me I should not get a car right away because I could drive my parents' cars when I needed to go somewhere and cars were money holes. I heeded the warning and put off buying a car until I was 21, living on my own, and had a job. The car in question, my first car, was a 1986 Chrysler Lebaron. It was small, white and a total dog. Hence, I named him Toto. Over the 8 months I owned Toto we had quite the adventures. I also apologized to him several times for buying him. As most of you know, I don't believe in luck, but if I did I would say I have the worst luck possible. Poor unfortunate Toto was no exception...

This is me and Toto a few days into our relationship. Within about 48 hours of this picture, he would catch on fire. It was a small fire under the hood and it was not my fault and it did not cause any damage, but still, it was only the beginning. Toto ran fairly well to begin with, that is after I took him back to the mechanic I bought him from to get the timing set. He came with one little problem though, a cracked tail light. The plexi-glass was still intact so I did not bother to fix it. One late evening on the Main Street in my home town of 900 residents, my local police officer pulled me over and gave me a ticket for a broken taillight. Apparently it gave off a funny glow and that can confuse other drivers. I bought red tape and fixed it up. Then I went out of town for a few days. When I came home I realized the tape had not stuck and needed to be redone. One problem, I had used all the tape. I decided not to drive the car until I got more tape, to avoid another ticket, but then came an evening when we needed to make a quick run to the neighboring city of West Point and there was no other choice. I was almost out of town when a cop passed me going the other direction and pulled me over. I was very distraught. First of all, there was no way he could have seen my taillight going the other way, so there was some other reason he had pulled me over. Secondly, now that he was parked squarely behind me, there was no way he was going to miss the taillight especially since I had broken all the plexi-glass out of it to tape it the first time. Needless to say, I got another fix-it ticket, a warning about not dimming my brights, and was required to bring my proof of insurance to the police station due to the fact that I had filed the permanent cards and put the temps in my car. None of that was really Toto's fault though, and once I discovered that super glue would hold red tape onto taillights really well, we were back in business.
Then Toto did something awful and totally uncalled for. He developed a leak in his break line. I was a quick learner on the subject of what exactly it feels like when it is time to get more break fluid and how to slow down without very responsive breaks.
I was on the verge of getting new break lines when I had a minor accident that rendered poor, unlucky Toto unfit for the road.

I prefer not to discuss the embarrassing details of my one and only serious accident. Let's just keep it simple and say I backed Toto into my brother Michael's pickup. It made the bumper of the pickup a little crooked, sent me to the Chiropractor with minor whiplash, and totally destroyed the back end of Toto. I cried. Toto crept everywhere he went, which was never very far. My job was only 2 miles from home on country roads, so I kept driving him to work. Then, I moved from the house down the road back to my family's house and ended up quitting my job. I guess Toto knew I did not need him to hang on to life any longer and 3/4 of a mile away from home he gave up the ghost. While I appreciated the fact that he did not die when I was on a cross-country road trip, I was not amused that my Dad had to use his pickup to push Toto the rest of the way home. It was decided he had in fact breathed his very last and we parked in in the weeds by the shed. A.K.A. we put him in the car graveyard. Until this week.

I saw an add in the Clipper looking for junk cars. We had hoped to haul Toto for iron, but never managed to get a trailer and time together. Nick came out Tuesday morning and all the kids took school off to watch him winch Toto carefully onto his trailer and take him away. I told Toto goodbye, apologized one last time for signing his title in the first place instead of letting an old lady buy him, and gleefully took my $150.00 to the bank. Even with his final gift to me Toto is helping me get places. The $150.00 went straight to my "ticket to Washington" savings. They say all is well that ends well, but I say as a warning, first cars might be the stuff of legends, but make sure your pocketbook is well padded and your health insurance up to date before attempting a legend like Toto.

New Years

We had an awesome New Years Eve party. Our good friend Matthew came up to join the festivities much to everyone's delight. We party well on our own, but we do so much better with an audience... The kids and I made an enormous amount of Chex mix, Trina got sparkling grape juice, Leah and Timo created a song list for our dance down; we were ready. Unfortunately we only remembered to take pictures when we were singing, so you will just have to imagine the pictures of everything else... :D

I fed the kids all coffee beans, something I am NEVER doing again. Rosie bounced around like a Mexican jumping bean for next to 5 hours straight.

Matthew brought his guitar and he and Leah played while the rest of us sang. After a while, we convinced Dad to get his out too.

The younger ones got tired of singing before the rest of us, so Dad took them into the kitchen for the first round of "Old Maid". Rosie ended up with the old maid with only Timo left in the running. When he unwittingly pulled it from her hand, her scream of happiness scared my socks off... :D Round two of old maid took much longer, when all of us played. If you want to know who ended up being the old maid, ask Leah, she knows.

John had been excited about our party for days. He decided he did not like coffee beans, and conked out by 8:45. He even managed to sleep through all of our crazy dancing. By the way, we had one of our best dances ever, and I came away with more battles scars than in the previous 6 months combined. As of today the bruises are all subsiding, so I can honestly say it was totally worth it. :D

We decided to end the party with a movie and settled on August Rush. No one fell asleep, not even during the slow parts, thanks to coffee beans. Following the movie we toasted the new year, had a short "Toss the MnM and catch it in your mouth" contest (which Matthew won hands down) after which we all went straight to bed.

Home improvements are a little bit of an unspoken tradition at our house around the holidays. One year Dad and I grouted the tile in his shower. One year Dad started a remodel. This year on New Years Day, the guys did what I think it my favorite home improvement to date. I LOVE having the dryer right next to the washer. Thank you again, guys!! One more time, Happy New Year everyone!!

The Best of Life With Rosie 2010

In honor of the new year, I decided to post our favorite 10 pictures from the year. Admittedly, Life With Rosie was not started at the beginning of 2010, so there were less than a years worth of pictures to choose from, but that did not make the task any easier. With 17 nominated photos, it was hard to narrow it down. However, here are the top ten complete with things I am thankful for from 2010.

1. I am thankful for all the hard work the kids did on the farm. Making hay, building fence, hoeing weeds, you name it. They are amazing.

2. God's provision of vehicles. The blazer, Alejandro, and Trina's truck. I am also thankful for God's protection of Dad and Benjy when the pickup was totaled.

3. Music.

4. Sunday afternoons. Oh, and agreeable younger siblings who posed for ridiculous pictures.

5. My camera, which enabled Life With Rosie to be an illustrated documentary and gave me a chance to learn a tiny bit about photography.

6. God's constant provision for our daily bread, above and beyond.

7. Spontaneous moments.

8. The gift of God's word. Worth reading in any situation.

9. The ability to spend lots of time outside this summer. (Trina's muscles too...).

10. Dancing. Not only has it kept me in shape, it has given me a great appreciation for people who actually know how to do it.

(Sorry, I tried so hard to narrow it to 10, but I could not).

11. Humor. Laughter does good like a medicine and God had given me at least a teaspoon every day. He always knows when I need it. That brings me to the thing I am most thankful for in 2010, which I have no way of capturing in a picture, God's love and faithfulness to me. It has been a really tough year for me in many respects, and I have cried many tears and asked many questions. Through it all, He has held me close and I feel like I am starting 2011 with a much dearer best friend at my side than ever before. To quote a friend of mine, there are things in this life I will never understand, but I know the One who does understand it all, and I have His book. And I would add, He has my heart. Happy New Year!
